Is Monarchy Allowed in Islam?

Islam propagates the idea that the rightful ruler of this world is Allah(SWT) alone. No one else has the right to govern people unless they do it within His defined limit. The humans are sent to this earth as vicegerent (Caliph) to Allah(SWT) to establish His rule and system. When a prophet is present among the people, he is Allah's(SWT) chief vicegerent and once he passes away, the next best person among the muslim nation is chosen by the mutual consent and consultation of the believers. The first 4 rightly guide Caliphs of Islam were the true vicegerents of Allah(SWT) after Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). They were chosen in a democratic way and were accountable for all their errors and mistakes. The first Chaliph of Islam, Abu Bakr(RA) had the following to say after he took over the Khilafa:

O Muslims! though you have made me your chief, I am not the best among you. If someone else among you had taken charge of this burden which you have put upon me, it would have been better for me. If you expect that I should rule you just as the Apostle of God did, then I must tell you that it is not possible. The Apostle received Wahi (Revelation) from Heaven, and he was infallible whereas I am an ordinary man. I am not better than you. Therefore, if you see me walking on the straight road, follow me; but if you see me deviate from it, reprove me. If I do right, support me; if I do wrong, correct me. Obey me as long as I obey God and His Apostle. But if you see that I am disobeying them, you too disobey me.
You have the Qur’an with you, and it is complete. God's Apostle has shown you both by precept and example how to conduct yourselves in this life. The strongest among you all is he who fears God. The weakest among you in my sight is he who is sinful. A people that gives up jihad, loses its honor. Be punctual in saying your prayers, and do not miss them. May God have mercy on you, and may He forgive you all."

According to a hadeeth:

There shall be Prophethood (nubuwwa) among you for as long as Allah wishes it to be among you. Then it shall be lifted up when Allah wishes to lift it up. Then there shall be successorship (khilâfa) on the pattern (minhâj) of Prophetship for as long as Allah wishes it to be. Then it shall be lifted up when Allah wishes to lift it up. Then there shall be a trying kingship (mulkan `âddan) for as long as Allah wishes it to be. Then it shall be lifted up when Allah wishes to lift it up. Then there shall be a tyrannical kingship (mulkan jabriyyatan) for as long as Allah wishes it to be. Then it shall be lifted up when Allah wishes to lift it up. Then there shall be successorship on the pattern of Prophetship. Narrated from Hudhayfa by Ahmad with a sound chain as stated by al-Zayn in the Musnad (14:163 #18319) and as indicated by al-Haythami (5:188-189):

There are two kingships that Quran talks about, one that is the kingship awarded to the pious people by Allah(SWT) like Prophet Dawood(Peace be upon Him), Prophet Solomon(Peace be upon Him), Dul-Qarnain etc., which is equivalent to Khilafa since all those pious people were acting as the vicegerent of Allah(SWT) and hence spread peace and justice on this earth. The other type is the one that is obtained by force, violence or by family association like Pharoahs of Egypt etc. The monarchs that I refer to are the ones that belong to this 2nd type. Islam believes that the people who are chosen to be the leaders of the Muslims (Ameer-ul-Momineen) should be the most pious among them and ever ready for his accountability in case of an scandle. The monarchs, however, were known from history to be the ones who basically ran the kingdom as their own property and tortured and killed people based on their own desire. They are not the ones to be confused with the vicegerent of Allah(SWT) since those monarchs will be judged much more severely then ordinary people in the hereafter as they exploited their position by their false desires of lust and word domination.

Assalamualaikum my brother, I have something to be discussed about,

1. What is your opinion on Sultan Salahuddien Al Ayubi who liberated Palestine? He is the first Sultan of the Ayyubid Dynasty...and it is a monarchy kingdom.

2. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) told us that Constantinople shall be conquered by a good and wonderful leader, with good and wonderful armies and people. And the conquerer was Muhammad Thani Al Fatih, the 7th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, who took the throne from his father, Murad Thani. And the great leader whom the prophet (pbuh) is talking about is him (Al Fatih), from a Monarchy Sultanate of The Ottoman.

3. Prophet Muhammmad (pbuh) told Umar Farouk that is, between him (Umar) and a great fitnah that shall split his (pbuh) Ummah was a door. Verily it happened, soon after the death of Umar, a fitnah splits the Ummah terribly. by seeing this, Muawiyyah (R.A), a close sahaba of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) change the sistem of demorcratic-typed caliphate to a monarchy government. Muawiyyah knows that by turning the democratic-caliphate to a monarchy-caliphate is bad, but giving the rulings to the Ummah is terrible. So in this tight situation, he had to change the system for the future of the Ummah. We must know that the Prophet (pbuh) once asked Allah to bless Muawiyyah with guidance and right path when he governs the Ummah in the future. So its clear that what Muawiyyah did is from the guidance of Allah as it is his Prophet's wish. And This system continue to bring the Ummah to a very golden age until 1924. When monarchy left Turkey in 1924, so as the Caliphate. And no Muslim Scholars fought the system for more than a thousand years, but the reality is, together with the Sultans/ Caliphs/ Ameers/ Kings/ Emperors, they help the Ummah and the state to rise and bring Islam to be the world's superpower, as we know in all history writings.

4. In many of Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) letters to the leader of Oman, Bahrayn and several arab clans including the Persian and Rome, he (pbuh) recognize the ruling system of the states if they embrace Islam, that is, the monarchy kingdom.

5. The Great Al Mahdi that will lead us shall be from the Prophet's (pbuh) bloodline, to fight the Pharaoh's bloodline that is today the royal kingdom of Britain and some other Western European States. And remember, he is originated from the east, along with the Harith Haarath and two other characters the prophets (pbuh) mentioned during that time. Check out the Hadeeths and review them. Today, many of the Eastern sultanates are from the Bloodline of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), including all Sultans of the 9 states in my country, Malaysia, and the Sultan of Brunei, the deposed Sultan of Sulu and Mindanao, Pattani, and many of the pretenders of the Indonesian Sultanates. All of the are Ahlul Bayt and have fight together with the people against European colonialism. As we know, these Eastern lands have been the longest struggle against the Europeans who do not ever wanted the Rise of Islam for the second time shall be from the East, the Malay Lands. I'm sorry for too much talking about my race, but we are now entering the last part of the world's conspiration to eliminate ALL MUSLIM KINGDOMS, SULTANATES, AND DYNASTIES. The reason? When The DAJJAL or the ANTICHRIST comes, there shall NO KINGS ON EARTH EXCEPT HIM!!

6. This problem, about the monarchy in Islam, has been solved a long time ago. From the culture of every muslims on earth until their ruling systems. And the proof is 1300 years of our glory under the Sultanate of Ahlul Bayt, from the Maghreb lands, African, Ottoman, Meccan Shareefs, Arabia, Mughals of India and the Malays. All of the Sultans are from the Ahlul Bayt, the Prophet's (pbuh) bloodline. And the reality is, these problems were brought up again to the modern muslims, which is, far from their Deen and its colourful histories, by the CONPIRATORS, ALL AROUND US. Just to make sure we never unite from east to the west by this small SHARIA problems. And from this point, the CONSPIRATORS, and the ANTICHRIST have found our weakness. Then these differences were brought by the new movement like WAHHBIST and many other groups who not know history and don't want to learn history. This is the reality.

7. I'm not the one who knows everything, but I just wanted to make my brothers and sisters to think and see the world that is full of conspirations. A very big Fitnah has break us apart and I hope we shall stay united under one KALIMA and IMAM. Unity is strenght.

These are some of the knowledge that I obtained, just wanted to be discussed. May Allah bless us with His Rahman and Raheem, and hopefully bring me to the right path if I made a mistake.

Assalamualaikum my brother.

U r lying.
Monarchy is the greatest bidat in islam. Ummaiyad and abbasid were corrupted dynasties the world have ever seen. They only used islam for their favour. They killed many innocent muslims for the sake of their kingdom. Even abbasid itself demolished ummaiyad to establish their kingdom.

We just need to look at one thing. Many a times after the monarch died, his sons would fight wars for succession, brothers killing brothers, so that was haram. During Muawiyah (RA)'s rule, there would be guards in masjids standing with sabers to make sure no one plotted against them. Abu Bakr (RA) clearly said on his appointment as Khalifah if he was not a good leader, for people to replace him. That's all the answer you need.

@Ejaz

The Quran & Hadiths themselves support Monarchy, there's also the fact that many previous prophets were Monarchs.
